Most people end up in residential care for the same reason.

Not because they got sick. Because they could no longer manage the things daily life requires. Standing up from a chair. Getting off the floor. Carrying things from one place to another. Walking between rooms without holding on to something for support.

These are not remarkable feats. They are the baseline of an ordinary life. And they are much easier to keep than to get back once they are gone.

Why gym movements are really daily life movements

The movements we train at Ignite look like gym exercises. In practice, they are more specific than that.

Getting up from a low chair is a squat. Getting off the floor after a fall is a transition from kneeling to standing. Carrying the shopping in from the car is a farmer’s carry. We are not simulating these movements in the gym and then doing different things in daily life. We are training the exact mechanics of an independent life, with enough resistance that when you need those movements outside the gym, they are reliable.

Function over fitness

This is what strength training does for people over 50. Not aesthetics. Not competition. Function.

The muscle you build now is the independence you keep later. It works best when it starts before the losses are noticeable. Waiting until something is already hard means you are chasing recovery. Start before that, and the goal is maintenance instead. Much easier.

Why I train the same way

I train for the same reasons my clients do.

I am not chasing a personal best or competing with anyone. I want to be able to play social rugby, walk my dog, get up off the floor, and carry my own luggage at sixty-five. Those are not dramatic goals. They are the difference between a life that stays full and one that quietly contracts.

Train with us in the Hutt Valley

If you are in the Hutt Valley and want to train in a way that makes sense for where you are now and where you want to be later, come in and talk.

Cheers,

Paul

P.S – If you want somewhere to start, the next Legends round begins on Monday, 27th July. Six spots left.
